Born in Ghana and raised in Alabama, Yaa Gyasi is the author of the novel Homegoing, which Ta-Nehisi Coates described as “what happens when you pair a gifted literary mind to an epic task.” The work earned Gyasi a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35” Award and the National Book Critics Circle’s award for best first book. Her highly anticipated second novel, Transcendent Kingdom, will be published in September 2020.
As a new major voice in American literature, Gyasi is committed to uplifting the stories missing from our history. Gracefully situating her own art within that of her two home nations, Gyasi explores cultural identity and America’s complex and deeply troubled relationship with race.
