Buckeye by Patrick Ryan book cover

We're defined by our good deeds in life, but also I think we have to be defined by what we do with our mistakes.

—Patrick Ryan

New York Times Bestselling Author

Since its release in September 2025, Buckeye, a sweeping yet intimate novel by Patrick Ryan, has garnered international attention for its emotional depth and unforgettable characters. “Patrick Ryan has created a world, and characters, that exist inside me now. . . . I could not recommend this book more highly,” praises Ann Napolitano. Featured on more than a dozen Best of 2025 lists, chosen as a national Barnes & Noble Book Club pick, and longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize, this transporting story of love, loyalty, sacrifice, and forgiveness has solidified its place as one of the most compelling and celebrated novels of the past year.

The novel weaves the lives of two Midwestern families across generations, from World War II to the late twentieth century. What begins as a fleeting transgression grows into a complex secret that binds them in unexpected ways. As their small Ohio town transforms in the postwar boom, the Salt and Jenkins families remain locked in one another’s orbit. The consequences of long-ago choices begin to surface and reshape their lives in ways that will forever impact the next generation.

Ryan is the award-winning author of numerous short stories, including the collections Send Me and The Dream Life of Astronauts, the latter longlisted for the Story Prize. He also serves as editor-in-chief of the literary magazine One Story. A writer since he was 16 years old, he currently lives in New York.
