Minneapolis Public Library was founded in 1885 and opened the city’s first public library building on 10th Street and Hennepin Avenue in 1889. In 1961, a larger and more modern building was constructed. In 2006, a new Minneapolis Central Library, designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli, opened to great fanfare. Today, it holds the largest share of Hennepin County Library’s world-class collection.

Friends of Minneapolis Central Library

Friends of Minneapolis Central is a volunteer-run organization whose mission is to support the Minneapolis Central Library and uplift the spirit of the surrounding community. As ambassadors for the library, Friends of Minneapolis Central Library members advocate for community needs and help promote library programs and services. Friends of Minneapolis Central Library generally meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m., in room 270 of Minneapolis Central Library.

We are seeking enthusiastic library supporters who are willing to volunteer their experience, knowledge, and skills to the Friends of Minneapolis Central Library Board of Directors.

The time commitment is manageable, the monetary commitment is manageable, and the reward is great! You'll know you are contributing to the vibrancy of the Minneapolis Central Library and making a difference in the lives of many people.
