Minneapolis Public Library was founded in 1885 and opened the city’s first public library building on 10th Street and Hennepin Avenue in 1889. In 1961, a larger and more modern building was constructed. In 2006, a new Minneapolis Central Library, designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli, opened to great fanfare. Today, it holds the largest share of Hennepin County Library’s world-class collection.
