What Doesn't Kill Me Makes Me Weirder And Harder to Relate To book cover by Mary Lucia

I couldn't just write a book about how afraid I was—because who would read that?

—Mary Lucia

Minnesota Music Icon

Mary Lucia is a local media broadcast personality, writer, actor, and voiceover artist. Known for her unconventional style and expansive music knowledge, she became a wildly popular on-air radio personality at Minnesota Public Radio station The Current over the span of nearly two decades. A shared love of tunes led to connections with a multitude of fans, but for one listener, that connection became a dangerous obsession.

What is it like to stay in the spotlight when it puts your life at risk? Lucia tells the story of a terrifying, three-year stalker nightmare in her profoundly courageous memoir, What Doesn’t Kill Me Makes Me Weirder and Harder to Relate To. With electrifying wit and outrage, Lucia reflects on navigating constant terror amid everyday life. From the good, bad, and weird of growing up in her eccentric family, to drugs, death, and dogs, Lucia uses her signature dark humor to share her life on her own terms. “Mary Lucia has been terrorized and let down and disrespected and underestimated,” says The Pogues’ Rocky O’Riordan, “yet here she is, raw and real with her spirit shining, braver and kinder than ever.”

Lucia hosted the local music show Popular Creeps, which won the Minnesota Music Award for Best Locally Produced Show twice, and she was voted best FM radio personality by City Pages seven times. She currently serves as the program advisor at the University of Minnesota’s Radio K.
