Hopkins Center for the Arts, 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN

ONLINE TICKET SALES FOR THIS EVENT ARE CLOSED. A LIMITED NUMBER OF TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE DOOR. ONSITE BOX OFFICE OPENS AT 10:15 AM.

One of today’s most celebrated authors and proponents of free speech, Salman Rushdie is widely known for the nine years he spent in hiding, forced underground when Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, claiming Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses was “against Islam.” A brilliant provocateur, Rushdie has penned eleven novels, three works of non-fiction, a book of short stories, and now a highly anticipated memoir. His work has won most of the world’s prestigious writing awards and has been translated into more than 40 languages as well as adapted for stage in New York and London.

Salman Rushdie will discuss his writing, politics, freedom of expression and the impact the fatwa had on his life. A copy of Rushdie’s new memoir, Joseph Anton: A Memoir by Salman Rushdie, is included in the price of admission.

This event is part of the Pen Pals Author Lecture series, a ticketed series benefiting the Friends of HCL. The 2012-2013 series features five diverse speakers in one scintillating series, including Salman Rushdie, Alice Kaplan, Roz Chast, Dennis Lehane and Armistead Maupin.

Individual tickets are $40 for balcony and $50 for main floor. Season subscriptions start at $160 for all 5 lectures and are on sale now. You can choose from Thursday night or Friday day. Call 612.543.8112 for more information.
